About
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is a program that seeks to identify and celebrate exemplary student artists and writers grades 7-12. Each generation of youth have unique vision and expression of ideas that lead to innovation in our society. The program provides opportunities for student recognition, exhibition of their work, publication and scholarship.
Our country is divided into affiliate regions to which students submit their work. Central Oregon is part of the larger Oregon Scholastic Region and any student in Deschutes, Crook or Jefferson counties can participate. There are 29 categories in which students can enter their art including a portfolio for senior students.

History
The Awards were created in 1923 by its founder Maurice R. Robinson, who wanted talented student artists to be honored for their creativity, skill and contribution just like our student athletes are honored for their skills. Since then, there has amassed a great list of well known artists, writers and filmmakers who are honored alumni. Some of these include Andy Warhol, Kay Walkingstick, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Lena Dunham, Zac Posen and Ken Burns.

The Awards
For the visual arts, students submit their works to their region in connection with their teacher. Works are evaluated by blind adjudication based on technical skill, originality and emergence of personal vision. Winning works are presented in a local exhibition and students are recognized in an awards ceremony. Those receiving a Gold Key(first place) as well as the American Vision Award(Best in Show) move on to be judged nationally. National winners are invited to New York City for the awards ceremony in Carnegie Hall and their works are exhibited in galleries such as the Parson School of Design Gallery or the Pratt Institute of Art Gallery. All national winners are listed in the yearly Scholastic Art and Writing Awards book and images of selected works are featured. There is also a travelling show of the works that appears in approximately 6 cities around the nation. For more information on the organization, please visit the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards website.
